Stanley C. Sivell

Stan Sivell, apparently know as “Mr Barking Bowls” passed away peacefully on Thursday 17th July 2008.  He was a dedicated volunteer, particularly in the world of bowls both outdoor and indoor.

Stan, a Labour supporter in his early years, served as a Councillor on the Barking Council for many years and was the youngest Mayor in 1962.  As a Justice of the Peace he regularly appeared at Barking Magistrates Court until forced to retire at the age of 70.  One claim to fame that he did not like to be remembered for was the official opening of “The Lintons” Housing Estate when he was Mayor.  He was pleased to see its demolition last year. Stan was a staunch supporter of the Barking Carnival for many years and also served as the Chairman of the Sports Council whilst on the Council. He received the Jack Thomas Award for Services to Voluntary Sport in the Borough.

A member of the original steering group for the formation of Barking & District Indoor Bowling Club, Stan became its Secretary in 1971 and subsequently also Company Secretary and President of the Club. As a strong supported of the Essex Country IBA, he was elected President in 1982 and the following year Competition Secretary, a position he still held on his death.  He also served as Liberty Trophy Team Manager for a number of years.

As an outdoor bowler Stan had some success, winning the Essex County BA Pairs on two occasions.  He held office as the Group 7, ECBA Chairman and Competition Secretary for a time.  He was also President, Chairman and Treasurer of the Barking Borough Bowling Club on a number of occasions.

Stan was a dedicated family man and will be greatly missed by Bella, his wife for 62 years, his family and friends, and not least by his many colleagues and contacts in the world of Bowls.

Our thanks to Peter Neighbour for the above.
